I hadn$0027t been to the dentist in longer then I would like to admit. In fact, it made me nervous about going to the dentist at all (which I have never been nervous about my whole life). I picked Murphy Family Dental because of their great reviews and comments that people had left. THEY EXCEEDED my expectations! The staff (from the front dest staff to the Doctor) was SO FRIENDLY and no one gave any mind to how long it had been since I had been in the dental chair. This week, I had a dental cleaning scheduled at Murphy Family Dental – or at least I was expecting to have a dental cleaning. Five minutes into my appointment, I was kicked out.
After feeding, dressing and loading up my 3 year old, and 1 year old, making sure I had a bag of snacks, water, toys, and two charged iPads, we made our way to my appointment. My 1 year old son has major stranger-danger – a common side effect for children of the pandemic with a lack of play dates, library story times, and access to other people in general. I knew he would cry, but I had his stroller with me and all the entertainment I could carry. I made the mistake of assuming the providers could just tune out his tears and put the patient first, just like they claim on their website. Murphy Family Dental goes so far as to claim Were here to make your visit as easy and comfortable as possible our goal is to bring a smile to your face with everything that we do.. My daughter is excited about her own dental appointment next week, and was very much looking forward to seeing mommy get her teeth cleaned after all of the hype I built up trying to combat any fear she may have of the dentist.
Not even 5 minutes into my exam, we were kicked out. My sons tears were too much for the hygienist to bear, and after getting up and walking away twice, he got up again and called over the dentist, Dr. Murphy, who asked us to leave because my sons crying is alarming the patients in the Pediatric Dentist office.
Ironic, because the Murphy Family Dental website claims they [offer] a variety of expert services using the latest in dental technology, always with a careful concern for the particular needs of each patient. What were my particular needs? Patience; making my dental health a priority, tuning out the tears for 20 minutes so I can receive adequate medical care. Ive waited months until I could receive a COVID vaccine and feel safe enough to receive care. I cancelled my daughters speech therapy appointment so she could see that the dentist isnt scary first hand. It is a huge scheduling burden to fit appointments for myself in the midst of all of the other needs of my family.
When I was leaving, the hygienist suggested I reschedule when I could find childcare. Did he really think I didnt try that first? Did he think that this was the ideal scenario for me? Two kids needing constant attention in the middle of my own medical care? Finding childcare isnt easy. Finding childcare in a pandemic is even more difficult. Finding childcare during a pandemic when your home is in a restricted access area, ie: a military base, has turned out to be impossible.
Murphy Family Dental needs to take a close look at their priorities for caring for their patients, ALL of their patients, and if they truly claim to be a practice that supports families they need to walk the walk. If my children werent welcome, there were ample opportunities to address that in advance, for example: the website, the pre-appointment email, or the pre-appointment phone call.

I am very anxious person when it comes to dental visits especially being a new patient. Dr. Chad performed two molar extractions including a filling with just local anesthesia..in less than an hour and a half. He did an amazing job administering local anesthesia, I did not feel the pinch from the needle and the entire surgery went very smooth. Very neat and clean, no stitches, swelling or bruises. Carol$0027s presence also made me feel so much better since day 1, I was so glad that she was my dental assistant once again for the surgery. The staff at Murphy Family Dental were able to gracefully handle getting me and my rambunctious, dentist-wary 5 year old twins examined and cleaned with great skill and ease. My kids are now inspired to care for their teeth more than before, using their timers and new brushes and floss. I was referred to this dentist by another dentist for a crown. Now I have been to a fair amount of dentists in my 35 years of life and this is by far the best dentist I$0027ve ever been to.
